Red Dead Redemption 2 Has Already Shipped Over 17 Million Copies

Red Dead Redemption 2 is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down, as the game has easily sailed past the 17 million mark and has sold more in eight days than Red Dead Redemption managed in eight years.

That, I’m sure I don’t need to tell you, is absolutely huge. Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two Interactive revealed the good news in a new financial report – a report that I can only assume consisted of a picture of CEO Strauss Zelnick smoking a cigar made of entirely of gold.

Red Dead Redemption 2 has been an absolute critical darling, with many praising the game’s rich open world and an attention to detail that borders on ludicrous. The game has also managed to net the biggest opening weekend for a media product in history.

It’s also the second biggest overall launch for an entertainment product, second only behind Grand Theft Auto V, another Rockstar-made game.

Rockstar continues to make buckets money from GTA V (a game which is fast approaching the 100 million mark). Add this to the impending arrival of Red Dead Online, which is expected to launch at the end of the month, and it seems clear that Rockstar and Take-Two are about to have a very merry Christmas indeed.

Oh, and if you’re wondering, Red Dead Redemption has shipped 15 million copies since May 2010 (according to the most recent sales figures from Feb 2017). The only way it could beat RDR 2 at this point is if all the PS4 and Xbox One consoles in the world suddenly burst into flame, leaving the previous gen as the only option for gaming.
